Insulation Resistance Testing: Configuration, Procurement & Standards

Time:2026-10-26 Number:4

10. How to Judge Whether an Insulation Resistance Tester Manufacturer Is Reliable

The real dividing line is often not "whether it can measure" but "whether the measurements are compliant, reproducible, and easy to implement in the field." When evaluating the reliability of a manufacturer, the following five points deserve attention: First, metrological qualification — whether a type evaluation certificate or factory inspection certificate issued by a legally authorized metrology institution can be provided, and whether periodic recalibration is supported; Second, standards conformity — whether the product manual explicitly states conformity with IEC 61557 or the corresponding domestic standard; Third, after-sales service — the response speed and service network coverage of calibration and repair; Fourth, field reputation — actual application cases in comparable projects (transmission and substation handover tests, preventive tests); Fifth, parameter transparency — whether the short-circuit current and maximum measurement range are stated together with their corresponding test conditions, rather than being vaguely labeled.

11. Configuration Recommendations and Purchasing Summary for Different Scenarios

Recommended Configurations for Typical Scenarios

Distribution O&M units (35 kV and below): Digital meter, voltage ranges covering 500V/1000V/2500V, measurement range down to the GΩ level, with automatic absorption ratio/PI calculation, automatic discharge and AC voltage detection. Portable, lithium-battery powered, IP54 or higher.

Substation handover and preventive testing (110 kV and above): High-end digital meter, voltage ranges up to 5000V, measurement range down to the TΩ level, short-circuit current at the 5000V range not less than 1mA, with data storage and communication functions, supporting report output.

Third-party testing laboratories and power research institutes: Intelligent meter, full-range coverage, accuracy better than ±5%, complete data management and reporting system, supporting integration with the test management platform.

High-voltage electrician training and hands-on examination: Mid-range digital meter, voltage ranges covering 500V/1000V/2500V, simple operation, complete automatic calculation features, optionally equipped with a small number of traditional hand-cranked megohmmeters for teaching comparison and demonstration.

Purchasing Recommendation Summary

First define the application scenario, then determine the parameter range, and only then compare prices — this is the correct order for model selection. An instrument whose test voltage ranges are insufficiently covered is of no use; automatic absorption ratio/PI calculation, automatic discharge and AC voltage detection are basic configurations and should not be treated as optional extras; the short-circuit current is the capability indicator that is most easily overlooked yet absolutely critical, and must be confirmed range by range at purchase; the value of data storage and communication functions varies by scenario and should neither be uniformly required nor simply omitted; metrological calibration is the precondition for compliant use, and data from an instrument that is overdue for calibration is not accepted in formal test reports.

Insulation resistance testing is the starting point of insulation diagnostics, not the endpoint. A normal test result does not mean the insulation is beyond doubt, and a low reading does not mean the equipment must be taken out of service immediately — combining temperature correction, historical trends, the absorption ratio and the polarization index, and making a comprehensive assessment together with other test methods, is the correct judgement path in engineering practice.
